It’s been proven repeatedly that the older your phone gets, the worse its memory and battery life gets. So, it’s understandable that you, as many do, want the latest and greatest model.

They’re usually expensive, whether it’s iPhone, Android, Google, or another brand. However, there are a lot of methods to keep your older smartphone up and running just as well as the newer models.

These 7 tips can help you increase your smartphone’s lifespan and delay the need for a new device.

1) Avoid over-working/over-heating your phone battery

There are many ways you can overwork your battery. One of the main causes to be wary of is routinely letting your battery drain to 0%. Also, if it is a hot day, limit how much you are on your phone. Overheating it can cause the battery to shut off, which causes strain on the overall battery health.

2) Replace the battery, not the phone

On a related note, if your battery does end up giving in and you can’t seem to keep it above 20%, don’t fret. The problem is not with the phone itself but the battery. Now, there is a downside to this, as most recent phones come with embedded batteries. This means you will have to have your local Apple store, repair company, or whichever option you can find to take part and replace the battery.

Buying a new phone is costly, so this is the cheaper/more affordable option. Also, if you feel up to the task, you can go with the DIY Battery Replacement Method. (Only go this route if you trust yourself not to break anything.)

3) Get a reliable phone case

This might seem obvious, but when you need it, you’ll be amazed at how much a strong case can really help your phone. Even a light drop from 3 feet can be enough to knock something loose. There are many great options for this. An Otterbox might be a bit clunky, but it is far worth the money they cost as it will protect your phone for as long as you have it.

4) Keep both your software and hardware up to date

Whether it be an actual phone update or a random app update, doing both is essential to the health of your phone. It could be a simple bug fix, or it could be a performance update, but they’re both vital. Also, these updates could improve security on your phone, which is essential nowadays.

If you use your phone as part of your work or personal lifeline, consider investing in business IT support services in Sydney or your closest major city. If your phone has an option for automatic updates, you should turn this on if not on by default.

5) Delete all of those useless apps

Come on, do you play Candy Crush anymore? Having many apps can be detrimental as it takes up your already limited storage. The same goes for photos, videos, and other files. It’s a simple process and doesn’t take much time, but it makes a world of difference.

6) Maintain the screen/charging ports

Any dirt or other minute objects in the charging port can hamper its charging ability. The longevity of your phone can be shortened very quickly by damaging your charging port. In addition, the repair process is annoying and slightly costly. So make it a routine to clean out the gunk routinely. A wooden toothpick and a keyboard duster will work just fine for this.

7) Back. Up. Your. Phone

This is more of a general tip than a tip to extend your phone’s longevity. Nothing is more infuriating than getting rid of your phone and having no way of getting your contacts, photos, data, and everything else located in the phone’s memory.

It’s simple to do, and there is no downside to it. The more frequently you backup your phone, the longer you can use it safely for your documents and photos.
