The pandemic forced most of the world to go into a prolonged lockdown, and the effect was significant for the education sector. The closure of university and college campuses globally led to the beginning of online learning for most students.

During this time, online learning portals began to be widely used. As campuses are reopening, many institutions still choose to continue remote learning due to the various advantages. It has led many to wonder whether remote learning is here to replace university campus life completely.

Shifting Towards a Hybrid Model

Most undergraduate programs are three to four years long, depending on what stream and subject you want to specialise in. As campuses begin to reopen, institutions and educators should evaluate the benefits of having a hybrid education.

A hybrid education would entail the student attending classes and events partially on campuses. It allows a good mix between on-campus and off-campus learning. The students can opt to take classes online from wherever they want for the rest of their course duration. It is the ideal way to expose students to the best qualities of both types of education.

Many institutions are adopting an approach where they introduce theoretical knowledge and lectures through pre-recorded video lessons and use on-campus class time as a way to interact with students. It enables them to teach in-depth concepts and start more discussions to increase engagement while the students are on campus.

Freeing Resources

A considerable number of resources are required to accommodate students each year within campuses. From living arrangements to arranging class space for lectures, a lot goes into the logistical planning for planning a student year on campus.

With remote learning, many resources that end up being used each year can be saved. Even having cyclical rotations of students throughout the year can allow for more students to be accommodated within a single year and lesser resources to be used or wasted.

Educational institutions can also look into introducing some aspects of remote learning into everyday campus life. It may include submitting assessments through a completely online mode, as many are already opting for such services.

Increased Accessibility and Scalability

There are many advantages of remote learning that university campuses can’t provide, like increasing scalability. More students can be enrolled and successfully complete required course credits within a year through remote learning.

Since university campuses are built to accommodate a specific number of students, it is challenging to increase these institutions’ scalability immediately. Online resources can enable this with seamless integration into existing systems.

Universities can increase their global expansion by implementing online classes through trusted platforms. It will decrease the costs of physical expansion in other countries but ensure that their presence is still noticeable. Renowned colleges like Harvard have already begun adopting this approach.

The Future of University Campus Education

As campuses are opening, it’s imminent that students will slowly begin to attend classes on-campus. However, it’s crucial to note that some aspects of remote learning should be applied to everyday campus life.

Having the best features of remote learning applied to campus education can significantly lessen the pressure and stress that many educators and students face as they begin to start classes.

With the onboarding of online learning courses and assessments, students can access more resources without being physically present on campus. Assessments will have faster turnaround times, along with better data analysis and insights available for educators. The insights can enable educators to make better curriculum and policies while students will have easier access and functionality.

While it is seen how remote learning and university campus education will turn out in the future, it’s clear that merging both these systems can enable students to be equipped for the next-gen workforce.
